1) The Tire Tread is Below Lincoln's Head
It is important to regularly examine your tires’ tread. Once tire tread falls to 1/16th of an inch or below, you should have your tires changed immediately. An easy method for examining tire tread is to insert a penny down it. If Lincoln’s head is visible, you should visit your local mechanic and have your tires replaced as soon as possible.
2) The Tires’ Wires are Visible
If a tire’s tread wears enough, the wires or “cords” inside the inner liner may become visible. If the cords are showing, it may be indicative of uneven wear caused by poor alignment or a tire that is out of balance. Regardless, if you can see the cords, your tire will not perform adequately and is in danger of blowing out.
3) Your Vehicle Develops a Vibration
If your car develops a vibration, it could be a sign you need new tires. When a tire is not properly balanced, it could wear unevenly, exasperating a vibration. Further, it is not uncommon for tires to develop air pockets, or bubbles, that can eventually lead to complete tire failure.
4) Your Tires are Showing Cracks and Signs of Dry Rot
Aging tires, especially on seldom driven vehicles that are exposed to sunlight and weather, may develop cracks and crevices due to dry rot. These cracks can lead to tire failure, especially when driving at highway speeds. It is important to have dry rotting tires replaced as soon as possible.
5) You’re Experiencing Poor Vehicle Handling
No one knows your car like you, so when something seems amiss with your vehicle’s handling, it is important to have your tires inspected. Poor handling includes:
- Frequent hydroplaning
- Increased stopping distance
- Slower corner speeds
- Tires slipping upon acceleration
- Vehicle “pulling” to left or right
- Vibrations
